Cube thoughts - Scars of Mirrodin

Here we are, two days away from the pre-release of Scars of Mirrodin, and I am pondering what impact the new set will have on my cube. For the first time I am having to think about rotations and card numbers.

When I started my cube, I had only just returned to playing after a break of 8 years. I had sold all of my cards and really only had cards from Alara Block onwards to call upon for my cube.

My goal for the cube was to have an extended cube, featuring the cards from Shards and the next six core sets to be released. I wanted to have my cube be creature oriented where the bulk of the game was contested in the attack phase.

Initially the cube size to be 400 cards, being 50 of each of each of the five colours, multi-coloured, artifacts and lands. This grew to 460 as I upped the creature count by 10 for each colour as the quantity of creatures was down from where it needed to be to achieve the creature on creature battle I was seeking.

I am happy for where my cube now sits and feel that my cube has successfully achieved the objectives that I set out to attain. With the advent of Scars, and the artifact theme that is so prevalent, the artifacts have to come into line with the other sections. To this end I am proposing the following changes to the cube.

The cube increases from 465 cards to 540 cards

Artifacts: 70 Cards
20 Creatures + 10
25 Equipment + 5
25 Artifact + 5

Each colour grows by 10 cards - 6 creatures and 4 non creatures.

Multi-colour grows by one each of allied colour pairs.

Lands remain at 50 cards.
